How Much Does a Vanity Plate Cost? All 50 States Compared

Virginia charges $10. Washington charges $174. But the sticker price is the wrong number to compare, because what you pay every year after that changes the ranking completely.

How Much Does a Vanity Plate Cost? All 50 States Compared

A personalized plate costs $10 in Virginia and $174 in Washington. That is a seventeenfold difference for the same seven or eight characters of self expression, and it is the number almost every article about vanity plate costs stops at.

That is what the plate costs to get. It is not what it costs to keep.

Most states charge you twice: once to claim the plate, then again every time you renew. Those two figures often have nothing to do with each other, and when you account for both, the list of cheap and expensive states rearranges itself. Washington, the state with the highest entry price in the country, is not close to the most expensive place to keep a plate for five years. Illinois is, by a margin of almost $300.

Here is what every state charges, what it charges you again next year, and what the plate actually costs you by the time you have had it a while.

The cheapest states to get a vanity plate

Six states will put your words on a plate for under $20 the first year.

Virginia, $10. The lowest entry price in the country, and not a coincidence that Virginia also has the highest vanity plate adoption rate in America at roughly one in six registered vehicles. When the barrier is a single ten dollar bill, a lot more people decide to find out what their plate could say. Virginia also allows eight characters, which is a character more than most states and genuinely changes what you can fit.

Delaware, Florida, Missouri and Wisconsin, $15. All four hold the same price at renewal, so they stay cheap indefinitely. Missouri caps you at six characters, which is tighter than it sounds once you start writing ideas down.

New Mexico, $17. Also an eight character state, and the second cheapest eight character plate in the country after Virginia.

The most expensive states to get started

Washington, $174. By a wide margin the steepest first year cost in the country. Worth reading the next section before you write Washington off, though, because the renewal tells a very different story.

Illinois, $123. High to start and higher to keep, which is the combination that actually hurts.

Pennsylvania, $103 and Minnesota, $100 round out the three figure club.

For context, the median state charges $40 and the average is about $47. Anything above $70 is genuinely unusual.

The number that actually matters

Here is where the simple ranking falls apart. Thirty seven states charge the same amount at renewal as they did to issue the plate. Of the thirteen that do not, ten get cheaper and three get more expensive.

The three states that raise the price on you:

StateFirst yearEach renewal
Illinois$123$164
Texas$55$90
Arizona$25$50

Arizona doubles. Texas adds about 64 percent. Illinois, already the second priciest state to enter, then charges you more than the entry fee every single year after.

And the ten that quietly get cheaper:

StateFirst yearEach renewal
Alaska$30$0
Iowa$25$5
Montana$25$10
Idaho$25$15
West Virginia$66.50$16.50
Washington$174$30
New York$60$31.25
Ohio$50$36
California$53$43
Pennsylvania$103$48

Alaska is the real answer to "what is the cheapest vanity plate in America." Thirty dollars, once, and then nothing. Not thirty dollars a year. Keep the plate for a decade and you have still paid thirty dollars, which no other state comes close to matching.

Run the math over five years and the leaderboard looks almost nothing like the first year prices:

Cheapest over 5 yearsMost expensive over 5 years
Alaska$30Illinois$779
Iowa$45Minnesota$500
Virginia$50Connecticut$470
Montana$65Kansas$427.50
Delaware$75Texas$415

Washington, the most expensive state to walk in the door, lands at $294 over five years. That is less than Minnesota, less than Connecticut, less than Kansas, and barely more than a third of what Illinois costs. A plate you keep is a different purchase from a plate you buy.

⚠️Warning

Check with your own DMV before you pay. We review state motor vehicle sites regularly and verify each state's figures one at a time, but fees change without notice and a state can raise a price without any announcement we would see. Treat everything here as a starting point for comparison, then confirm the current number with your local DMV before you commit to anything.

Each state name above links to its own page here, with the fee, the character limit, what punctuation is allowed, and a direct link to that state's own application page so you can check it at the source.

What these numbers do not include

Three things worth knowing before you budget.

In most cases this is the personalization fee, not your registration. The figures above generally reflect what a state charges on top of what you already pay to register the vehicle, so a vanity plate is usually an upcharge rather than a replacement. How a state structures and bills it does vary, which is another reason to confirm the total with your own DMV.

Some states separate the plate from the personalization. Depending on where you live you may also pay a one time manufacturing or plate issuance fee, typically a modest amount, on top of the figures here.

Specialty designs stack. If you want your custom text on a university, military, wildlife or charity plate rather than the standard design, that specialty plate usually carries its own annual fee, and the personalization charge sits on top of it. A specialty plate with custom text is routinely the most expensive combination a state offers.

💡Pro Tip

If you are deciding between two states because you are moving, compare the renewal column rather than the first year. Over any length of ownership that is the figure doing the work.

Does a cheaper state mean a better plate?

Not really, and the thing that limits most people is not money.

It is characters. Thirty six states cap you at seven, six states cap you at six, Wyoming allows only five, and seven states give you eight. That single character is the difference between fitting a word and abbreviating it into something nobody can read at a glance. We break all of it down state by state in vanity plate character limits by state.

If you have an idea that needs the room, it is worth knowing which states have it: our 8 letter plate generator is tuned to the states that allow eight, and there are 7 letter and 6 letter versions for everywhere else.

And whatever your state charges, the application fee is the same whether your idea is good or not. Print your finalists at full size before you pay for one. A word that reads cleverly on a phone screen can read like nothing at twelve inches wide, and finding that out after the DMV has processed your application is an expensive way to learn it.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Which state has the cheapest vanity plate? A: Alaska, if you keep it. Thirty dollars once and no renewal fee, so the price never goes up. Virginia is the cheapest to start at $10 a year, and the cheapest over any period where you renew annually.

Q: Which state has the most expensive vanity plate? A: Washington has the highest first year cost at $174. Illinois is the most expensive to own, at $123 to start and $164 every year after, which works out to $779 across five years.

Q: Do I pay the vanity plate fee every year? A: In most states, yes. Thirty seven states charge the same amount at every renewal. Alaska is the notable exception with no renewal fee at all, and nine more states including Iowa, Montana, Idaho and West Virginia charge less to renew than to issue.

Q: Is the vanity plate fee on top of normal registration? A: Yes. Every figure here is an upcharge added to what you already pay to register your vehicle, not a replacement for it.

Q: Can I transfer my vanity plate to a new car? A: Usually, and it is normally cheaper than starting over. Policies and transfer fees vary, so check your state's page for the specifics where you live.
