Tips for 7-character vanity plates

01.Combine two shorter concepts. Seven characters is enough for two 3-4 letter words with or without a space (e.g., 'GRN CAR', 'K9 VET').
02.Use two kinds of substitutions. Phonetic: 8 = ate, 4 = for, 2 = to/too, 1 = one, K9 = canine. Visual: 0 looks like O, 9 looks like G (as in 9OT YOU for GOT YOU), Q playfully replaces O (as in LQQK for LOOK).
03.Prefer complete words over abbreviations when they fit. 'DOCTOR' (6 chars) reads better than 'DR MED' (6 chars) because it's instantly recognizable.

Which states allow 7-character vanity plates?

Most US states use a 7-character limit for standard passenger vanity plates. That includes California, Florida, Texas, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and 30+ others. Wyoming (5), Alaska/Hawaii/Massachusetts/Missouri/Oregon/Rhode Island/South Dakota/Vermont (6), and New York (8) are the exceptions.

Do spaces count as characters?

In states that allow spaces on vanity plates, yes - a space counts against your 7-character budget. So 'I PLANT' uses all 7 of your characters (I, space, P, L, A, N, T).

Can I use special characters like hearts or stars on a 7-character plate?

A few states offer decorative symbols on specific plate designs. Texas allows hearts, stars, the Texas silhouette, hyphens, and periods on standard personalized plates. California allows symbols only on its Kids Plate program (a separate specialty plate), not on standard personalized plates. Most states are letters and numbers only.

We can't check DMV availability from here - each state runs its own database of already-registered plates. Once you find a plate you like, check availability on your state's DMV website. Have 3-5 backup ideas in case your first choice is taken.

What if I want a plate shorter than 7 characters for a specialty plate design?
