Tips for 6-character vanity plates
- 01.Six characters rewards compact, single-word plates over two-word combos. 'DIVDND' beats 'DIV DVD'.
- 02.Learn two kinds of substitutions - phonetic (8 = ate, 4 = for, 2 = to/too, 1 = one, K9 = canine) and visual (0 looks like O, 9 looks like G as in 9OT, Q playfully replaces O as in LQQK for LOOK). Both earn back a character every time they work.
- 03.Vowel-drop is your friend. DRVR (driver), MSTR (master), MNGR (manager), TCHR (teacher) all fit tightly.
- 04.Use widely-recognized abbreviations rather than making up your own: PRO, VET, GRN, K9, ROI, DR, MGR all read cleanly to strangers.
- 05.Skip the second word entirely if it forces truncation. A confident single word ('MUSCLE', 'ROCKET', 'THRIVE') often beats two half-words.
- 06.Say the plate out loud. If a stranger can't unscramble it in one pass, it's not doing its job.
Frequently asked questions
Which states have a 6-character vanity plate limit?
Alaska, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Missouri, Oregon, and Rhode Island use 6 characters as the maximum for standard passenger vanity plates. Rhode Island is currently not accepting new applications - check their DMV site for the latest status.
Can I generate a 3 or 4-character plate?
The character-limit setting is a MAX, not a fixed length. If you're hoping for shorter ideas, set the MAX to 5 - that's the tightest lane we allow and gives shorter plates the best chance to come out. Fair warning though: fitting your name, hobbies, or interests into 3 or 4 characters rarely produces anything that meaningfully reflects who you are. Short plates almost always end up as initials or single common words like HAPY, COOL, or CUTE, which you can pick yourself without a generator.
Do spaces count as characters?
In states that allow spaces, yes - a space counts against your 6-character budget. 'BOB LN' uses all six of your characters. If you can drop the space and still read it clearly, do that first.
Is 6 characters really shorter or does it feel similar to 7?
That one character makes a bigger difference than it sounds. Two-word plates get very tight (5 chars split as 3+2 with a space) and you lose the room for both a name and a hobby. Best 6-character plates tend to focus on a single strong concept.
Can I use special characters like hearts or stars on a 6-character plate?
Most 6-character states are letters and numbers only. Hawaii, Missouri, and Oregon allow the dash; Missouri also allows the apostrophe. Alaska, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island don't allow any special characters (Massachusetts additionally doesn't allow spaces). For decorative symbols like hearts or stars, you would need Texas, a 7-character state that allows hearts, stars, the Texas silhouette, hyphens, and periods on standard personalized plates.
Is this generator really free?
Yes. Every visitor gets 3 free generations (10 plate ideas each) with no signup required.
Can I use my full name in a 6-character plate?
If your name is 6 characters or fewer (Bob, Sue, John, Mary, Steve, etc.), yes. Longer names typically get truncated or paired with an initial. Consider a nickname or first-initial-plus-hobby combination.
Can I use this generator if I don't live in the United States?
Yes. The tool is built around US state DMV rules, but the plate ideas themselves work anywhere. If your local plates allow 6 characters, pick a US state with a 6-character limit and you'll get the same kind of creative wordplay and abbreviations. Double-check your local DMV's specific rules (allowed characters, spaces, symbols) before submitting an application.
