Free 4 Letter License Plate Generator
Four characters is the shortest plate this generator will build, and the hardest one to get right. There is room for exactly one idea - a word, a nickname, a trade acronym, a car badge - so the trick is choosing which one is worth the whole plate. Give it your name, your job or what you drive and it will come back with ten different ideas.
Every state allows a 4-character plate
No state caps personalized plates at four - the tightest maximum in the country is Wyoming's five. That makes four characters a choice rather than a restriction, and it works everywhere. Two floors are worth knowing: Ohio requires at least four characters, so four is exactly its minimum, and Oklahoma requires at least four letters, which means a four-character Oklahoma plate has to be all letters with no digits.
Want a different plate length?
Every state allows 4 characters, so this page works wherever you live. If you want more room to work with, each of these is tuned to a specific state limit:
Tips for 4-character vanity plates
- 01.One idea per plate. Four characters cannot carry your name and your hobby at the same time, so pick whichever says more about you and let the plate be just that: HIKE, CAMP, SURF, ROAM.
- 02.Jobs compress better than almost anything else, because most trades already have their own four-character shorthand. Nurses have STAT, NPO, PRN and CBC. Developers have SUDO, RTFM and CMMT. If you work somewhere with its own vocabulary, start there.
- 03.Names shorten three different ways, and it is worth trying all three. Margarette gives you the nickname (MARG, MAGS), the tail end (RETT) or the consonant skeleton (MGRT).
- 04.Cars give you either the badge or the engine. A Mustang GT becomes STNG, PONY or 5OGT - all four characters, all instantly readable to anyone who cares.
- 05.Do not spend a character on a space. 'RN SM' uses five characters to say less than SMRN does in four, and in most states it will not fit at all.
- 06.Letterform swaps buy back a character when the shape genuinely reads: 0 for O, 3 for E, 5 for S. S0RE for s'more works. Pushing past one swap per plate usually does not.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a state with a 4-character plate limit?
No. The shortest maximum in the country is Wyoming's five characters, and most states allow six, seven or eight. Four characters is always a choice you are making rather than a limit you are working around.
Can I get a 4-character plate in any state?
Yes. A character limit is a maximum, not a required length, so four characters is legal in all 50 states. Two states have minimums worth noting: Ohio requires at least four characters, which four satisfies exactly, and Oklahoma requires at least four alphabetic characters, so an Oklahoma plate at this length must be all letters with no digits.
Will a 4-character plate actually be available?
Expect to need several options. Short combinations are the most requested plates at every DMV, so the obvious four-character words and common initials have usually been taken for years. This is the one length where we would genuinely suggest applying with a list rather than a single favourite - generate a batch, pick five you would be happy with, and check them in your state's lookup before you pay anything.
Why would I want a plate this short?
Two reasons come up. A short plate is read and remembered at a glance, which is the whole point for most people who want one. The other is practical: specialty and collegiate plate designs often have fewer character slots than the standard plate because the artwork takes up room, so if you already know you want a particular design, generating at four keeps every idea usable.
Can the generator go shorter than 4 characters?
No, four is the floor. Below that there is nothing left to say about you - three characters is initials or a stock word like FUN or JOY, which you do not need a generator to think of. No state requires fewer than four either, so there is no practical reason to go shorter.
Do spaces count toward the 4 characters?
Yes, where a state allows spaces at all, and a space is a full quarter of this plate. The generator will not use one at this length because it is almost never worth the character. Connecticut and Massachusetts do not permit spaces on personalized plates under any circumstances.
Can I fit my name on a 4-character plate?
Short names go on directly - Dave, Sam, Mary, Lisa, Jose, Anna all fit. Longer names need a nickname or a compression, which the generator will try several versions of: it turned Shaina into SHAY and Margarette into MARG, MAGS and RETT.
