First-time personalization uses a prorated non-refundable service fee: $8 for the first month of your registration period plus $2 for each additional month, added on top of your regular registration fee. At renewal, a flat $15 personalized service fee applies each year in addition to the annual plate fee. A second decorative plate can be purchased for $5, but note that a decorative plate cannot be registered on a different vehicle. Renewals can be handled online, by mail, or at any Michigan self-service station. If your registration expires, you have a 30-day grace period before your plate combination becomes available for someone else to claim. Because an availability check does not hold the combination for you, Michigan recommends ordering as soon as you find a combination you want. Approved plates ship from Lansing. Michigan also reserves the right to recall a personalized plate at any time if a configuration is later determined to conflict with state law.
