Texas Vanity Plates

Texas's shorter character limit runs counter to the state's everything is bigger reputation, which forces vanity plate designers into creative abbreviations. Popular themes include the Longhorns and Aggies (any combination with HORNS or AGGIE gets scooped up), Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans references, unmistakably Texan words like YALL or HOWDY, and the state's oil and cattle ranching heritage. Texas's plate designs vary more widely than most states, with dozens of specialty background options ranging from the Texas flag to college alumni versions to bluebonnet nature scenes to armed forces branches. Many drivers pair a specialty plate background with personalized text, doubling the customization options and making Texas plates some of the most visually varied on American roads.

Texas character counts vary by plate design, with most standard designs allowing up to 7 alphanumeric characters. Where Texas really stands apart is in symbol support: beyond letters, numbers, and spaces, you can include hyphens, periods, hearts, stars, or silhouettes of the State of Texas on your personalized plate. No other state comes close to this range of design elements. If you include the International Symbol of Access on an eligible plate, you lose two of your available characters. Some plates (military and university designs) display a logo that occupies a fixed position and cannot be moved. Every combination must be unique across all Texas personalized plates. Texas also has one of the most specific single-combination rules in the country: the number 69 is prohibited unless it appears as part of a full year (like 1969) or in combination with a reference to a vehicle. Standard rejection categories cover indecent content (sexual references, body parts, excreta), vulgar or swear words, derogatory content targeting groups or protected characteristics, gang or illegal-activity references, controlled substance or intoxication references, law enforcement or government representations, and combinations that could be misread by law enforcement. TxDMV reviews requests against language, phonetic, numeric, reverse, acronym, mirror-image, and coded interpretations, and does not always weigh the applicant's declared intent. Notable protected categories: any reference to a military branch, rank, unit, equipment, or status is explicitly allowed, as are references to higher education institutions (private, state, federal, or military academies).

Texas has been offering personalized specialty license plates since 1965, longer than most states. Availability can be checked online through the state's specialty plate program, and applications are submitted through the same portal. Personalized plate fees are added on top of your regular registration and any other applicable fees. Because personalized plates are custom manufactured, TxDMV does not offer refunds once your order is placed, so double-check your spacing, characters, and symbol placement before submitting. The state's personalized plate program is governed by Texas Transportation Code Sections 504.005, 504.0051, 504.008, 504.101, and 504.102, and by Texas Administrative Code Title 43 Chapter 217, Rules 217.27 and 217.45.
