Standard motorcycle personalized plates cap at 6 characters. Distinctive plate types (Special Group Recognition, In God We Trust, Disability, Military, and other specialty designs) cap at 6 characters for passenger and 5 for motorcycle. Every PLP must be at least 2 characters. Letters A-Z and numbers 0-9 are allowed, along with spaces between characters, but no more than one consecutive space is permitted. Special characters are not accepted. A plate cannot be all numbers, and every combination must be unique across all BMV-issued plates. Low-digit plates in the 1 through 100 range are reserved and require authorization from the sponsoring organization.
You can apply at a BMV branch, at a BMV Connect Kiosk, or online through myBMV. PLP messages are issued first-come first-served, and approved plates typically arrive within 30 days. Eligible vehicles include motorcycles, passenger cars, RVs, and trucks with a declared gross weight of 11,000 pounds or less. The PLP fee is $45 and applies at initial registration and every annual renewal. If your registration lapses for more than one calendar year past its expiration date, your PLP message becomes available for anyone else to request on the following January 1. If your PLP is denied on grounds of offensiveness, being misleading, or otherwise improper, Indiana gives you three options: register a standard plate of the same type (with your PLP fee refunded), select an alternate PLP message (with your fee applied to the new choice), or file a formal Petition for Review with the Office of Administrative Law Proceedings in Indianapolis. You have 18 days from the denial letter to request administrative review before the denial becomes final. Indiana also launched a Blackout plate on August 8, 2025 (black background with light lettering) for an additional $45 per year, plus another $45 per year to personalize it. Blackout plates must be picked up at a BMV branch if you want to keep your existing PLP message.
