Quick Facts
Hawaii Vanity Plate Culture
Hawaii's Aloha spirit and island identity shine through the state's vanity plates. References to individual islands (Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Hawaii Island), Native Hawaiian language and cultural terms, and beach and surf culture are perpetually popular. The University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors inspire fan plates, alongside beach-lifestyle themes tied to specific breaks and beaches. Beyond island pride, Hawaii drivers embrace themes tied to Volcanoes National Park (Kilauea), Pearl Harbor commemorations, hula and traditional Hawaiian arts, and the Rainbow State branding. North Shore surfing legends, Diamond Head landmark references, and Waikiki tourism themes also appear regularly.
Hawaii's personalized plate rules include a quirk that trips up first-timers: the letters I and O are treated as identical to the numbers 1 and 0 (and vice versa) when the state validates uniqueness. That means L1KE and LIKE count as the same plate, so you cannot work around a taken combination by swapping I for 1 or O for 0. The character limit is 6 letters, numbers, or a combination, with one hyphen allowed in addition to or in place of one of your six characters. Spaces are allowed but have to be explicitly noted when you apply. Since January 2025, standard Hawaii plates are issued with the state name spelled HAWAIʻI, including the okina diacritical mark. Older plates without the okina remain valid and do not have to be replaced.
Initial personalized plate applications are online only, through the county's personalized plate website. The annual fee is $60, added to your regular motor vehicle registration and taxes. After approval you receive a letter within 60 to 90 days with instructions for picking up your plates at a satellite city hall, along with a $5.50 plate and emblem replacement fee. One warning worth remembering: tampering with or altering a Hawaii license plate is a misdemeanor that can carry a fine of up to $100 or a small amount of jail time.

Tips for Getting Your Plate Approved
Be Creative, Not Clever
DMV reviewers are trained to spot hidden meanings. Avoid leetspeak substitutions (like 3 for E, 0 for O) that spell inappropriate words.
Have Backup Options
Popular combinations are often taken. Prepare 3-5 alternatives before starting your application to avoid delays.
Check All Interpretations
Read your plate backwards, look for hidden words within the text, and consider how it might be misread. If there's any doubt, choose something else.
Understand the Fees
Application fees are typically non-refundable even if rejected. Make sure your plate meets all guidelines before paying.
Common Rejection Reasons
- Already taken: Someone else has the plate in Hawaii
- Hidden meaning: Plate spells something inappropriate when read differently
- Too similar: Resembles existing plate or official designations (like "POLICE")
- Foreign language: Translates to something prohibited in another language
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to get my vanity plate?
In Hawaii, vanity plates typically arrive within 4-6 weeks after approval. During peak times (like year-end), processing may take longer. You'll receive a confirmation when your plates ship.
Can I transfer my vanity plate to a new vehicle?
Yes, in most cases you can transfer your personalized plate to another vehicle you own. Visit your local DMV or complete the transfer online. A small transfer fee may apply.
What happens if my plate request is denied?
If your plate is rejected, you'll receive a letter explaining why. Most states allow you to submit a new choice without paying another application fee, but policies vary. Contact the Hawaii DMV for specific appeal procedures.
Can someone in another state have the same plate as me?
Yes! Vanity plate availability is only checked within your state. The same combination can exist in multiple states since each state manages its own plate registry.
How do I renew my vanity plate?
Vanity plates renew with your regular vehicle registration. You'll pay the standard registration fee plus the annual personalized plate fee of $60.00. If you don't renew, you may lose your plate combination.
Can I reserve a plate before I buy a car?
Some states allow plate reservations, but Hawaii policies vary. Check with the DMV directly. If reservations aren't available, you can check availability online without committing to purchase.
What if I sell my car? Do I keep the plate?
Vanity plates belong to the owner, not the vehicle. When selling your car, remove your personalized plates and either transfer them to your new vehicle or surrender them to the DMV. Never sell or give away plates with the vehicle.
Are vanity plates available for motorcycles?
Yes, most states including Hawaii offer personalized plates for motorcycles. Character limits may be different (usually fewer characters) due to the smaller plate size. Check the DMV for motorcycle-specific options.
